Math

In my classroom, math is all about discovery.  Discovering numbers, patterns, attributes, etc.  We used a variety of manipulatives everyday to practice our math skills.  I wanted the students to leave my classroom with a strong number sense background that was developmentally appropriate for their age.

Patterns

One of the most important skills that we focused on throughout the year was patterning.  We started the year with simple ABAB patterns and by the end of the students were able to create more complex pattern sequences on their own.

We used a variety of different types of manipulatives throughout the year to practice our patterning skills.  Sometimes it focused on the theme (i.e. insects during our insect unit) or a certain attribute (i.e. colors or shapes).

We also created patterns using our bodies such as clap hands, stomp feet, clap hands, stomp feet, etc or lining up boy, girl, girl, boy, girl, girl, etc.

Anytime I found the opportunity we counted (lining up to go outside, how many students are here today, how many napkins do we need for snack).  I had many songs that dealt with counting up to 10 or backwards for 10.  We sang them together on a daily basis.  They made number books using magazine cutouts, stamps, and many other materials found in the classroom.
