Themes

I did not have a curriculum my first two years at Chesterbrook Academy.  The company provided the teachers with standards that the students were expected to meet by the end of the year.  In addition to the standards, I used Science and Social Studies based themes to make the classroom an exciting place for the students.  Each month we talked about a different theme.   Below is a sample of several themes that I have taught and activities the students completed.

* Retelling the fairy tales with flannel board characters.

*Acting out "The Three Little Pigs," "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," and "Three Billy Goats Gruff."

* Writing and illustrating our own fairy tale as a class.

* Comparing and contrasting the fairy tales.

* Reading different versions of Cinderella.

The Rainforest

* Acting out "The Umbrella" by Jan Brett

* Learning a song about the different layers of the rainforest.

* Decorating our classroom with homemade plants and animals that live in the rainforest.

* Reading stories about rainforest animals.

* Acting like penguins (i.e. waddling races, balancing an egg on our feet, sliding on our bellies)

* Discussing the North and South poles on a magnet.

* Experimenting with magnets.

* Learning about opposites.

* Reading books about the different types of animals found in the North and South Poles.

North and South Pole

* Searching for insects on our playground with magnifying glasses.

* Learning an insect song to help us remember the characteristics of an insect.

* Making our own insects out of things found in the classroom using our knowledge about the characteristics of an insect.

* Reading books about different types of insects.

* Making insect collages.

This was an ongoing theme throughout the year.  I had many students who had different cultural backgrounds.  We had guests visit our classroom to discuss different holidays throughout the year.  Some of the holidays we discussed were:

* Kwanzaa
* Rosh Hashanah
* Passover
* Martin Luther    King, Jr.'s Birthday
* President's Birthday
* Valentine's Day

* Veteran's Day
* Halloween
* Diwali
* Thanksgiving
*Christmas
* Hannukah
